Housing corporation Woonmaatschappij Dender-Zuid is looking to realize a new contemporary residential project by replacing the existing dwelling and commercial spaces which no longer meet current living standards. By integrating new, modern and comfortable housing, Woonwerk designed an improved residential environment with its own identity while fitting within the specific context of Driekhoeksstraat. Identity, well-being, safety, and a sense of security form the core values of the project.
The site conditions are thoughtfully integrated into the design, such as the unique topography and height differences and a network of connecting paths leading to the rest of the neighborhood. The new design connect seamlessly with the qualities of the surroundings and focuses on the active use of public space as an extension of residents’ living environment, encouraging walking, cycling, improved mobility and safe parking.
The potential for reusing certain elements is investigated, such as repurposing the basement of the commercial spaces as the new parking space and free-up outdoor paving currently used for parking, for green spaces and biodiversity.
